All About That Base – The Best & Worst Foundations

I’m grateful for many things in my life; family, health, travel etc etc but one superly superficial thing I’m thankful for is foundation. I never used to be a huge fan of foundation, bar my Maybelline Dream Matte Mouse phase throughout my awkward teenage years, and it was only in the last few years that I realised just how much of a difference a good base can make. You can even out your skin tone, make skin appear smoother, pull your entire makeup look together and not to mention cover anything up that you’re little heart desires. In saying that, I’m not one to wear makeup as a mask, rather I use it to enhance my appearance.

I’ve tried a few foundations in my short time on this earth and I don’t know about you, but I enjoy having a sneaky squizz at other peoples foundation collections. Not only because I’m a bit nosey but also because I’m always on the hunt for the next best thing. After all, a lousy base wouldn’t work for a house or a relationship and the same goes with makeup; it’s all in the base. So let me guide you through my liquid foundation collection and see how I rate them.

Rimmel Wake Me Up

The Price: £8.99

The Coverage: Medium

The Finish: Dewy

The Verdict: Even though I’m an oily skinned gal, I must admit that I love this foundation. It provides a decent coverage that doesn’t look cakey and leaves you looking glowy. Beware- a powder will be needed in the T-zone for ladies that find themselves getting oily during the day like myself.

NARS Sheer Glow

The Price: £31.00

The Coverage: Medium

The Finish: Dewy

The Verdict: Another winner. This foundation is one of my favourites to wear on a night out as it has a beautiful, buildable dewy finish. It doesn’t work so well on me during the warmer months as I tend to get oily with it but for dry and normal skinned ladies who are looking for the perfect foundation for your skin, look no further than Sheer Glow.

EX1 Invisiwear

The Price: £12.50

The Coverage: Medium to full

The Finish: Satin

The Verdict: This foundation is specifically made for ladies with olive toned oily skin. I use this when I’ve fake tanned and I absolutely adore it. When I first tried it I wasn’t so sure but I’ve become obsessed now. I still need to powder after I apply it to keep the shine at bay but other than that, no complaints here!

Stila Stay All Day

The Price: £29.50

The Coverage: Medium

The Finish: Matte

The Verdict: This foundation claims to have a matte finish but I think it’s more of a satin one. The issue I have with this foundation is that it claims to ‘Stay All Day’ when infact after only about an hour after using it, I’m already oily. Although it’s not a bad foundation and would work perfectly well for other skin types, it just doesn’t quite work for me. You win some, you lose some!

Rimmel Match Perfection

The Price: £7.99

The Coverage: Medium

The Finish: Satin

The Verdict: The only better thing than a good foundation is a good foundation that’s cheap! Match Perfection from Rimmel fits the bill perfectly. It has a gorgeous buildable Satin finish which left my skin looking glowing rather than greasy. It also has an SPF of 18 too. What more could I ask for?

Estee Lauder Double Wear Light

The Price: £26.95

The Coverage: Medium

The Finish: Matte

The Verdict: When I first bought this foundation I loved it. It’s matte finish left me looking fresh for hours and the coverage was enough to even out my skin tone and hide imperfections without appearing cakey. For some reason my skin stopped responding well towards it and whenever I would check my appearance throughout the day, you could really see that I was wearing foundation and the matte finish looked powdery. It’s seldom used these days; I’m not quite sure what went wrong!

MAC Face and Body

The Price: £22.00

The Coverage: Light

The Finish: Dewy

The Verdict: If you’re part of the 1% of the population who has perfect skin, congratulations! You’ve just found your perfect foundation! Not part of that 1%? Then I’m afraid this may not be the foundation for you. The formula is so liquidy and thin that it made me look oily rather than dewy straight away, oh dear. I’ve met people that swear by this foundation so perhaps it’s me that has the problem but for some reason I just didn’t quite gel with it.

Estee Lauder Double Wear

The Price: £26.50

The Coverage: Medium to full

The Finish: Matte

The Verdict: This has been my holy grail foundation for some time now but like the Double Wear Light, I’ve started to go off it a little for the same reasons; my skin is starting to get oily after a few hours and my skin is starting to look cakey! What’s a girl to do?!

 L’Oreal Lumi Magique

The Price: £10.99

The Coverage: Medium

The Finish: Dewy

The Verdict: This foundation is gorgeous for dry to normal skinned ladies as it gives a dewy, lit from within glow. For the combination and oily skinned people of the world it may not be ideal but I still wear it anyway because I long to have beautiful glowing skin (without the grease).

What’s your favourite foundation? Let me know in the comments below.

Until next time,

Katie x
