Anyone that knows me well knows that I am a total beauty junkie. Admittedly, I’ve calmed down in recent years (I went a little cray when I lived in Australia), I mean, how many neutral eyeshadow palettes do you really need?
If you’ve been following me on Instagram (@therunawaydiaries) you would have seen that I’ve been away for the past few weeks. I’ll be travelling for a total of 6 weeks over the Summer and I’m only bringing carry-on with me. Only travelling with hand-luggage for 6 weeks may sound like a females worst nightmare but in reality, it’s pretty practical! You won’t overpack and you cut any time spent waiting around in airports in half. Anything to get rid of the extra faff sounds perfect to me.
This is the second Summer in a row that I’ve travelled like this and the only pesky problem I’ve encountered is squeezing all my liquid beauty bits into the little plastic 100mL or less sleeve. You all know the one. So today I’m going tell you what ride-or-die beauty bits I choose to pack into that little plastic bag.
(From left to right: Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo, The Body Shop Camomile Cleaning Oil and L’Oreal Professional Silver Shampoo)
These 3 babies are absolute lifesavers. The Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo has not only saved me from London’s hard water (this needs its own whole blog post) but it also removes any build up that may have found itself in your hair. Don’t overuse it as it can be a little harsh on the hair but I simply couldn’t go 6 weeks without packing it.
Being a combination skinned girl (oily around the T-zone and normal everywhere else), it may seem quite counter intuitive to use an oil based product however The Body Shop’s Camomile Cleaning Oil is my favourite cleaner I’ve ever used and it deserved a place in my carry-on. Perfect for taking off the days makeup (which I’ll admit is pretty rare when I’m on a beach holiday) and making the skin feel baby soft, I’d be lost without it.
Bottle blonde girls like myself know the struggle of trying to maintain natural looking blonde hair on a Summer holiday. It doesn’t take long for my hair to turn a nasty brassy colour with all that time in the sun and, as often as I try not to, the odd head dunking in the pool. About once a week I lather my wet hair with the L’Oreal Professional Silver Shampoo, leave it on for around 30 minutes (which probably isn’t recommended but I’m a rule breaker) and then rinse off in the shower. Voila! The ashy blonde hair remains.
(From left to right: Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer, Eucerin SPF 50+ Face Mattifying Sun Fluid, Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation)
These 3 face products are perfect for travelling during the Summer as they all contain reasonably high levels of SPF, an absolute necessity if you’re going to be out in the sun as often as I am. I’m not going to harp on about sun protection as we all know about that by now but I will however harp on about these products!
The Smashbox Photo Finish Primer’s tube packaging makes it the perfect primer to take on overseas trips as it’s compact and no-fuss. Having only recently made a foray back into the primer-using world, I have to say that I really like this. Makeup glides on effortlessly over the top and the fact that it contains SPF 20 is a huge bonus.
Estee Lauder’s Double Wear is my all time favourite foundation as it’s the only one I’ve used that manages to stay on all day and leave me without a reflective forehead. What more could a girl want?
Eucerin Face Mattifying Sun Fluid is a travel necessity. Having used a few face sunscreens in my time, this one and the Neutrogena’s Face Sunscreen are my absolute favourites as they leave the skin protected without any of the oily mess that occurs when you use traditional sunscreen.

Did you know that oily eyelids were a thing? Well they are. I have oily eyelids and I’m not afraid to say it. The NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base is an incredible eyelid primer; the doe foot applicator makes it super user friendly and using it ensures your eyeshadow will last all day long.
This MAC lipstick in See Sheer has been not only my favourite MAC lipstick, but my favourite lipstick fullstop. The gorgeous muted coral tone is the perfect in-between nude and bold lip colour. Not too dull and not too bright. Perfection.
(NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer and MAC’s Paintpot in Blacktrack)
In all honesty these are the two products I use the least on holidays however seeing as they’re such staples in my regular beauty routine I had to bring them along with me (you never know right?!).
For a full review of the NARS concealer click here and you’ll see why I love it so much. As for the MAC Backtrack Paintpot, what can I say? It creates the perfect winged liner and although I don’t do it often when I’m away (way too lazy), it’s good to know it’s there as an option.
The Maybelline Falsies Volum Express in black has long been one of my favourite mascaras. It volumises, thickens, lengthens and is blacker than black. What’s not to love?!
So there you have it! My liquid carry-on beauty picks. And for those of you who were wondering, I usually just buy a mini-toothpaste and deodorant when I arrive in the country. Don’t worry, I’m not smelly I promise.
